24-hour time, sometimes called military time, is a way of measuring a full 24-hour day instead of dividing it into two 12-hour quarters. To change from 24-hour format to 12-hour format, remember that a 24-hour day starts at 00:00 instead of 00:00. However, the minutes remain the same. For the first hour of the day, just add “12” where you see the first 0 to convert it to 12 hours. For example, 00:25 in 24 hour format is 00:25 in 12 hour format. After that, the rest of the morning hours look the same. Anytime after 12:59 in 24 hours, subtract 12 to get 12 hours. For example, if the time is 5:00 p.m., subtract 12 hours to get 5:00 p.m. in a 12-hour format. For tips on converting 12-hour time to 24-hour time, read on! Because of the simple concepts of the term used, it allows for less confusion and is the preferred term to refer to the military community, medical field and scientific fields! It has become an option and more universal time because many parts of the world use this method of reading time. Places like the Philippines, Germany, Australia, India and many others use and recognize military time.

Sometimes you may wonder if military time is written as 2400 or 0000? The answer is both. In almost all military and emergency services, you will see midnight referred to as both 2400 and/or 0000. With some timekeeping devices such as displays on digital clocks, digital watches, and computers, you will see a 24-hour format. These devices will use 0000 to display midnight, because it’s a new day! Payment processing is critical to your business. What does it take to fix it? Clock conversion.

Clock conversion means converting your employees’ working hours and minutes into decimals to calculate their wages. Here’s a calculator of the hours you can use to do just that. Simply enter the hours from your employees’ time cards on the left to get the decimal hours on the right.

Usually, you get records of the employee’s working time in hours and minutes. But hours and minutes do not directly equate to money owed. Why? Because an hour has 60 minutes, not 100. You need to convert the time into decimal numbers to determine the direct pay rate for your employees.

This is especially important for employees, who are often non-exempt employees. It is also important to keep track of lunch breaks, general break time, overtime pay and holidays.

### Time Lesson Plan

Consider Melanie’s situation. This week, you worked 37 hours and 42 minutes (and no overtime). The price he gets is \$15.

First, you need to take information from their weekly timecard or timesheet that contains their check-in and check-out times (psssst….free timecard templates here). Then you need to multiply the number of hours he worked by his rate to find his total weekly earnings.

However, if you take 37 hours and 42 minutes as it is, you will get 37.42. This is false because, again, an hour is made up of 60 minutes, not 100. Minutes must be converted to decimals.

Remember, this is Melanie’s full salary. To find his take-home pay, you’ll need to factor in deductions and taxes.

If you don’t want to use a conversion calculator (like the one above), another basic tool is a decimal conversion chart. When you want to convert, say, 17 hours and 25 minutes to a decimal, you can easily look at the conversion table and see that it equals 17.42 hours.

In addition to converting hours and minutes to decimal hours, you may want to convert the time from 24-hour format to 12-hour (am/pm) format. This is necessary if your employee timesheets are set to a 24-hour format, for example.

The 24-hour system is commonly referred to as military time. It is often used by the military, government, transport services, hospitals and similar organizations.

Rather than having the hours of the day from 1 to 12, a 24-hour clock starts at midnight and runs until midnight the next day. It does not use the words am/pm to indicate whether the time is morning or afternoon.
