Bringing together industry, academia and manufacturers, the innovation center will primarily be housed in a state-of-the-art greenhouse complex on the city’s campus. Features include a variety of hydroponic systems that grow plants in a soilless root medium with optimal amounts of water and nutrients. Vertical growing racks maximize space, and high-tech engineering and technology are integrated and showcased throughout the center. High-value demonstration crops include lettuce, herbs, strawberries, blackberries, hemp, and more. In addition, faculty and staff involved in the center will conduct research and education on aquaculture in controlled environments using aquaponics, or recycling aquaculture systems that combine plant and fish production. Although traditionally seen as separate fields, plant and fish production share many similar technologies, problems and requirements.

According to Michael Schwartz, director of the Virginia Seafood Agricultural Research and Extension Center, this new collaboration will further strengthen domestic seafood production.

“The U.S. national seafood trade deficit is currently over $15 billion, and more than 50% of the seafood we consume comes from aquaculture,” he said. “With this new programming and expertise and infrastructure development, we have the opportunity to dramatically increase domestic seafood production, state, regional and national production, food security, safety, sustainability and, most importantly, socio-economic development in our agricultural economies . . . “

Other benefits of controlled organic farming include consistent, year-round production, potentially pesticide-free farming, and significantly reduced land and water requirements.

Aerofarms, a leading environmentally controlled commercial producer based in New Jersey, recently announced the world’s largest indoor farm at Cane Creek Center in Pittsylvania County. While this industrial-scale operation shows scalability, Michael Evans, director of Virginia’s School of Plant and Environmental Sciences, believes the technology is accessible to small farmers in the region.

To promote market growth and in line with its role as a regional catalyst for economic transformation, the Innovation Center will introduce controlled environment technologies to regional market entrants. Conferences, workshops, site visits and web presence will be part of the outreach and education activities. According to Evans, controlled environment agriculture is a rapidly growing field that offers many potential opportunities in Southern Virginia.

“We are excited to locate this facility on the Institute’s campus for advanced learning and research and benefit from both the technology developed and the associated economic development opportunities,” said Scott Lowman. “Consumer demand for healthy, local and pesticide-free products is high and will continue to increase in the coming decades.” We look forward to meeting this demand through controlled organic farming. “The Northwest Agricultural Research Center is one of seven campus research centers in the research centers. NWARC consists of 200 hectares of irrigated and dryland and has modern plot equipment, laboratory equipment, facilities and greenhouse space. NWARC’s scientists and staff are actively involved in local agriculture and enjoy interacting with farmers, ranchers and agribusiness. They work with the MSU Cooperative Extension Service to meet the agricultural needs of our immediate area and the wider Northwest Montana.

NWARC, Montana Agricultural Experiment Stations (MAES) and Montana State University, a grant-making university, were established by the Legislature in 1947 for the benefit of Montana producers, particularly in the following counties: Flatted, Sanders, Erie and Lincoln. Our crop research can be divided into two complementary areas; Celery systems with emphasis on pest management (biotic stress) and field crop physiology with abiotic conditions and growth factors (abiotic stress).

As new pests emerge in the region, research is directed toward developing management strategies to combat the new threat. Recently, economic and environmental demands have shifted the emphasis of research to focus on crop nutrient use efficiency and water use efficiency. Existing agricultural research institutions have, on average, delivered rates of return on public investment of more than 30-40 percent; This is higher than the 5-10 percent available for other public investments or the 2-5 percent cost of borrowing public funds. Recent studies have also shown that there has been no significant decline in these yields over time or differences in yields across regions.
