Rhetorical Precis Template – Today you write a rhetorical summary in your English Journal about the article you read about stereotypes. Check out the slides below to help you.
More help: Rhetorical summary is an AP strategy for succinctly analyzing the content, purpose, and persuasion strategies of a callout. A rhetorical precision is a paragraph and follows the pattern below:
Rhetorical Precis Template
Sentence 1: Write the author’s name, the genre and title of the work and the date of publication in parentheses; rhetorically precise verb; and a “that clause” containing the main claim or thesis statement in the work.

Writer and musician James McBride argues in his article “Hip-Hop Planet” (2007) that while hip-hop is not his favorite music genre, it is one that demands to be listened to. He supports his claim by first explaining that he avoided hip-hop his entire life when it was first introduced into society and became one of the most popular music genres of all time. He then explains how he came to understand hip-hop’s message, and finally warns parents that he’s here to stay and that if you ignore him, you’ll ignore the voice of a generation. McBride’s goal is to convince people to be open to both hip-hop and other new experiences that might seem strange at first but are worth exploring. He strikes a serious and urgent tone with the parents he addresses, warning them not to exclude music from their children’s generation.

Sentence 1: Present the author’s name, the title of the work (date) and a rhetorically correct verb that describes the author’s intention (“states”, “argues”, “suggests”); and a DAT clause that contains the main claim or controlling idea of the work. Sentence 2: Explain how the author supports or develops his argument. In other words, indicate the type of evidence or method the author uses to promote his claims, rather than the details of the work. Sentence 3: State what you think the author’s purpose is, including a “to” sentence at the beginning or end. Sentence 4: Describe the target audience and/or relationship.
Sheridan Baker argues in her essay “Attitudes” (1966) that writers’ attitudes toward their subjects, their audience, and themselves largely determine the quality of their prose. Baker supports this argument by giving examples of how inappropriate attitudes can make writing obscure, pompous, or boring, concluding that a good writer “will be respectful of his audience, considerate of his readers, and somehow kind to human shortcomings (58) Its aim is to make its readers aware of the dangers of negative attitudes to help them become better writers.It establishes an informal relationship with its audience of students interested in learning to write “with conviction” (55).

The Rhetorical Précis format a) In a coherent sentence, record the following: -author’s name, title of work, date in parentheses; -a rhetorically correct verb (such as “argue”, “argue”, “deny”, “disprove”, “prove”, “disprove”, “explain”, etc.); ) of work. b) Explain in a coherent sentence how the author develops and substantiates the main claim (thesis statement). c) Provide a statement of the author’s purpose in a coherent sentence, followed by an “in order” sentence. d) Describe in a coherent sentence the target audience and/or the relationship that the author establishes with the public.
Charles S. Peirce’s article “The Fixation of Belief” (1877) argues that human beings have psychological and social mechanisms designed to protect and reinforce (or “fix”) our beliefs. Peirce supports this claim with descriptions of four methods of fixational persuasion, pointing out the effectiveness and potential weaknesses of each method. Peirce’s aim is to point out the ways in which people commonly construct their belief systems, in order to stimulate the reader’s consciousness to reflect on how their own belief system may be the product of such methods and for what Peirce calls “method of science”. as a progressive alternative to the other three. Given the technical language used in the article, Peirce is writing for an educated audience with some knowledge of philosophy and history and a willingness to think differently.
