Hang it on the fridge or window. Or tie a piece of fishing line and attach them to the ceiling. This is a great winter craft and a really fun way to make decorations that will last all winter long!
Do you remember making paper snowflakes as a kid? Do you do your best to fold the paper correctly and cut out random shapes in the city?
I remember being so excited to open them up to see what shape I had made. It’s amazing to see the beautiful snowflake shapes you can make with just a few cuts!
Using a standard size of printer paper, take the bottom right corner of the paper and move it up and toward the left edge. The bottom edge should line up perfectly with the left edge.

Run your fingers along the diagonal edge to create a crease. The triangle should have a perfect shape, with a long rectangular shape on top.
Cut a rectangular strip right along the edge of the folded paper. You’re left with a triangle that turns into a perfect square!
Step 1: Take a square piece of paper and fold it in half diagonally to make a triangle.
Step 3: Fold this smaller triangle in thirds. Start by moving the right point a third to the left.

Step 4: Next, bring the left point one-third to the right. The patterns below are easy to use, but if you’re doing this by hand, you may need to adjust the folds to make sure the edges line up nicely.
Step 6: Cut out the snowflake pattern on the sides of this small triangle. You can cut triangles, diamonds, curves, and even half hearts. If you cut off the top, you will have a snowflake with a hole in the middle.
Step 7: Carefully open the snowflake and use your fingers to flatten it. If you want it to be really smooth, you can iron it on a very low heat setting.
You can use printer paper, newsprint, or construction paper to make paper snowflakes. Do not use heavy paper or it will be difficult to cut.
Snowflake Arts And Crafts For Kids
I like to use plain old printer paper (8.5 x 11 inches), but any size will work. If you have it, you can use legal size paper (8.5 x 14 inches) – then use the scraps to make two smaller snowflakes to go with it. Or, if you have tabloid-sized paper (11″ x 17″), you can make very large snowflakes.
If printer paper is difficult to cut, try parchment paper instead. Parchment paper is much thinner than plain paper, making it easier to cut.
Any pair of scissors can be used as long as they are strong and sharp enough. Children’s scissors are often not strong enough to cut through all the layers of paper.
I like to use “detail scissors” for paper snowflakes. They are fine shears (they’re my pink shears in the video below) with shorter, sharper blades that make detailed cutting easier.

When using templates, the process is the same as above, but I have marked lines and templates where I need to fold and cut.
Make sure the printed lines are sticking out when folded. Don’t fold along the lines or you won’t be able to see them when it’s time to cut the pattern.
