Guided Reading Lesson Plan Template – Teaching and planning guided reading lessons can seem overwhelming at first. I know that when I first sat down with my children, even though I saw great models, I was very worried about putting them all together. I’m not even sure I should be teaching what I’m supposed to be doing. I feel like I didn’t know

Finally, I broke it down, finding my focus for each level group with source cards. I got into a rhythm. My group rocked and rocked!

When students come to my desk, I want everything ready because I don’t have a minute. I usually have:

In addition to a set of flat readers for this group, there are other resources I like to have and share with students:

When students come to my desk, I “warm up their brains” by re-reading the books they bring home. If I choose, I can create a file running on a student at the moment, but remember that it is not a cold read, it means that it is in the text that the student has seen many times at home. , read and reread. – read. This is not an accurate measure of their independent reading level.

Then we put our books on the floor and work on the words together. It varies according to the reading level of each group. For some, we just use the chart and read it together when we say “Apple, apple. /a/, /a/, /a/.”

For others, they can put their alphabet letters and then we can do a short word-making activity.

For everyone, I will review the sight words found in the lesson we will read that day. I’ll show them a sight card or they’ll find the words on the wall, write them three times quickly, and then we’ll read them three times quickly.

At this point I will introduce the book to the students. Example: “Today we are going to read a silly book about two dogs who think they are people!” I tell them the sight word is in the ____ book and then we go on a sight word hunt with highlighter tape looking for that word.

I then ask them to connect and help them identify what they might be reading. “Have you ever seen a dog act like a human? What did it do?” I let the students share.

Next, I will let the students draw pictures from the book and talk about what they see the dog doing. This is great for ELLs because it helps them practice the vocabulary they will soon be reading. It is also a healing moment for me when I need it.

Finally, I’m going to add anything that might appeal to them. For example, if there is a picture of a dog, but the page contains “puppy”, I can see that the puppy is called puppy. I don’t want to set them up to fail, but I don’t want to give them every word in the book that they will ever see. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I then set the purpose of the reading by saying, “Let’s read to see how two dogs are human. When we are done, we will list the work they have done. โ€ Students must have a real purpose for reading and need to know it.

Then I let the students read the book aloud. He read the book three times. We love using Whisper Phones for this! If you don’t have a full set of six Whisper phones, don’t worry. They can take turns using what you have – my students did.

While the students are reading, I listen to someone else read and take notes in my Guided Reading notebook. I like to keep it all in my binder. It’s easy for me to quickly look and see who I haven’t heard from this week and who I have. After I make the recording, I usually listen to other people read and just take notes on what they do well and what they don’t.

After everyone has read, we talk together about what happened in the book. Sometimes we do this by doing a 5-finger recount, a simple beginning, middle, end, or talking about characters, places, problems, and solutions. It all depends on the level. I love using the Guided Reading Resource Cards to make sure I’m targeting the right skills! Download them for free here.

Sometimes we will write quickly. I ask the students to write sentences like this:

Not only do they enjoy using dry erase boards, but they also enjoy writing about what they read. Because it’s simple and short, anyone can share their writing, and personal comments are always appreciated.

Example: “Joshua did a great job of writing down the voice he heard.” “Kayla started her sentence on a big note. “Nico did a great job creating a vertical list.”

When we finish, each student brings their new book to read in their backpack. All I ask is that they read it three times at home. Not only are they taking home lessons where I know they can read and are successful, but without parents sitting and listening to them read (although I hope they are!) the students can still succeeded because he studied. with me. I set them up to succeed, not fail.
